Christian Radio & Independents

One of our CRW Signature Reporters, Mike Carrier, Music Director at KAFC/KATB inAnchorage, Alaska, recently sent me the following email. This was in response to a radio survey that asked the question, “Does your station air unsigned, independent artist radio singles?”  Here’s Mike’s response.

“I typically don’t take much time to listen to them, unless they are local, and well produced. That’s the problem… most Indy artists don’t have well produced songs. Other than that, if I don’t have room to add a core artist and want to break new artists that have the time and money behind them, why would I want to try to break an Indy artist? We are being inundated with music from major labels right now, and with current research available to us showing that we only have room for maybe one or two songs to add a week (if that), most Indy music gets thrown to the wayside. Sorry, and no offe
nseto these hard working Indy artists, but major labels get first priority. The other issue is availability of music to the listener. Sure there are digital downloads available and social networking sites, but most audiences are still looking for a physical product to order.”... Click For More

How to Sing in Front
of Thousands

To sing in front of thousands: That’s the hope of just about every Christian music artist or band, is it not? You dream about it. You visualize it. You know that God placed that desire in your heart, but yet, you just can’t seem to get that break you need. If you truly have that desire to sing in front of thousands and you are not doing so just yet, the next two questions are likely the questions that you have been asking yourself. Why would God place that desire in me if I just can’t seem to expand my ministry into a larger platform? Why are others ministering on a national or international level when I am not, even though I am just as qualified or talented?... Click For More

PART 8 - What is CCLI?

CCLI (Christian Copyright Licensing, Inc.) was founded in Portland, Oregon on October 1, 1988. Its purpose was and is to help churches comply with various aspects of Copyright Law. For example, when the lyrics to a song are projected onto a screen the same copyright laws apply as if we were using sheet music or the hymnals that were purchased. A "lyric reprint" license is required by Federal copyright law to compensate the songwriter(s) and publisher(s) for using their product. Let us make sure the point is clear; when we sing songs in a worship service there is no "fee" or "charge" to do that. But when we retype...
